Week in the Space Proposal Guidelines
We’re very glad that you’re interested in proposing for Week in the Space. Please feel free to contact pw or any board member at any time with any questions, or if there is anything we can do to help you with the proposal process.
I. Part One: The Essentials
A. Proposal Package:
The proposal packet should be given to pw by 5:00 pm on Wednesday, February 16. This packet should include:
- 4 paper copies of your proposal
- One copy of your script, if there is a script.
- also email a copy of your proposal (and, if possible/applicable, the script) to the mentor.
If this is a problem, let pw know. We’ll be happy to help you out!
B. Decision:
The board will meet to decide on the following saturday, and you will be informed of its decision by sunday.
II. Part Two: Suggestions for Your Proposal
1. To begin with:
Please remember that these guidelines are suggestions, not laws written in stone. We recommend taking them into consideration because they cover issues that often surface in both proposal and production processes. The most important part of your proposal is of course your commitment to it, the energy and thought you have invested, and that you are ready to invest in the production process. Above all, be thoughtful and have fun with your proposal!
2. The Basics
Title (even if it is just a working title), author (if there is one), director/coordinator, your phone number (please include this, we will need it to let you know the outcome of the proposal meeting).
3. Main Body
You should address the following questions:
- Describe your piece to us. (Is it a play? A puppet show? Tell us what it is you want to do.)
- Why do you think week in the space is the right venue for your project?
- What kind of design/technical elements are involved in your production?
- How will you go about preparing for this production? (a rehearsal process, or coordinating meetings . . . . whatever you will be doing to get ready for your event.)
- What inspired you to do this piece?
Please keep in mind that we are not looking for long, elaborate answers to these questions (although, please write as much as you want/need to). A brief statement communicating esssential ideas will do; many of these questions can be sufficiently addressed in a page or less. But again, write as much as you need to in order to fully address these issues.
4. Budget
Please include a budget breakdown that does not exceed $250. This breakdown should include costs for rights (if applicable), props, costumes, set contruction, publicity, photocopying, etc. Please try to estimate as close to the actual costs as possible. If your project includes a script for which rights should be obtained, let pw know as soon as possible.
5. Staff
For the proposal, the only essential staff is a Production Manager. Please include one, since Week in the Space is a unique slot and a Production Manager will be vital to the success of your production.
If you would like, you can also (but do not need to) include:
Stage Manager Set Designer Lighting Designer Costume Designer Technical Director Master Electrician Props Publicity
For the actual production, you may also need:
Dimmerboard Operator Set Construction Crew Sound Operator Running Crew (if applicable)
Board members may be able to provide you with names of people who might be interested in these positions. Please talk to us!
Thank you for your interest. We encourage all directors to ask questions of us as board members and to feel comfortable discussing proposals with us. We’re happy to help in any way possible.
