3 Chairs 2 Cubes - Directors

Welcome the 3C2C director’s page! Below, you’ll find a little bit of information about directing a show for 3 Chairs 2 Cubes.

Directing 3C2C is a great opportunity for a new director to get started at Brown or an experienced director to try their hand working on new material. We’re looking for vibrant ideas, sensitive script-reading, and people who can make these plays really blossom. Since rehearsal calendars are worked around cast schedules, this is also a chance for a director who might not be able to make the full commitment of a downstairs space PW show.

Scripts are now available on this website. Just go back one page.

If you wish to apply to direct one of the plays: Please write the Production Workshop board a short application, including the following:

your previous theatre/directing experience, specific ideas you have for each of the plays, your plans for the rehearsal process, which of the shows you are most excited about and why, which, if any, of the shows you absolutely refuse to direct.

A panel of PW board members will select a director for each play. Once chosen, directors will have a couple days to confer with their playwrights before auditions. Potential directors should leave those entire evenings free, since casting can sometimes go rather late into the night! Once the cast lists go up, it is up to the director to schedule rehearsals. We recommend an absolute minimum of 10 hours of rehearsal a week (during the two weeks leading up to tech). Beginning tech week, all participants are required to attend rehearsals between the hours of 6-11pm.

A lighting designer will provide lighting for each show. Directors will be encouraged to accomplish what they need using a minimum of light cues. Directors will be responsible for pulling together the sound cues (if they want them) and they’ll need to find the costumes and props from within our shops. The set is restricted to three chairs and two cubes. We’ll be encouraging directors to collaborate with their playwright as much as possible. They’ll have the option of doing re-writes on the script during the first week of rehearsal, and they’ll also be able to give feedback to directors during casting. We encourage directors to USE the playwrights and make the experience a good one for them; this is not “New Directors,” this is a project focused towards new writing.

Although we encourage directors to create and invent, we also want to make sure that a satisfying evening of theatre is achieved. At least one 3C2C producer will sit in on a run-through of each show and will give private feedback to the director after that rehearsal.

Applications for directing 3C2C in Fall 07 will be due September 25th by 5pm in the PW box office (slip it through the hole in the glass) at T.F.Green. Contact Charly if you have any questions.
