The upstairs space does not have an application. It is a space that can be signed up for by any Brown student. This makes it one of the more creative spaces on campus. You are encouraged to experiment and push the envelope. Restrictions are made only in the interest of preserving the space as a venue for the Brown community in years to come.
One group and/or person may only reserve one weekend of primetime per semester. Also one group can reserve only one event of weekday primetime per month.
The space cannot be signed out for more than three rehearsal days of "primetime" usage in a week. Primetime is 7pm - 11pm every night. Weeks start on Sunday. Performance times are not held to this restriction.
Performances may not be scheduled during the evenings of tech week for a downstairs space show, with the possible exception of silent performances or installations that do not create noise conflicts. All installations of this type taking place during Tech week must be approved by the upstairs space coordinator and the downstairs space production manager. Contact Kaya with questions. Tech weeks are blocked out on the upstairs space calendar.
Events involving excessive noise may only take place between the hours of 6:00pm and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. (On evenings other than Friday and Saturday, any group performing or rehearsing in T.F. Green has the right to ask another group to be quiet.)
To perform in the space you must give PW a $50 deposit in the form of a check made out to Production Workshop. This is to ensure that no physical damage is done to the space. If the space has not been damaged, the check will be destroyed or returned (your choice). To perform in the space you must also sign a "Miranda Policy," which can be obtained from the upstairs space coordinator. The Miranda Policy details these rules and regulations.
All Brown students have global card access to T.F. Green Hall from 7:30am to 11:00pm. However, keys are not handed out to the space. A PW board member will let you in. You must make sure that the doors are locked when you leave. If you need to leave the doors in the unlocked position during your rehearsal times, contact the upstairs space coordinator to arrange this.
Along with the space come 6 fresnel lights, two 2-channel amps, 4 speakers, a light board, a sound board, a CD player, and seating of some sort (arranged with the board). Additional lighting, sound, costumes, or furniture must be reserved through special arrangement. This includes lighting cable, gels and gel frames, minidisk players, and an additional CD player. The use of dressing rooms (possibly shared with other events) may also be arranged.
A PW board member will monitor performances. The board member has the right to shut down the performance if, and only if, he or she feels that the performance is endangering the audience or the space. To ensure that this does not occur, PW would like to be notified if the performer plans on performing something that may break health standards or endanger the audience. The material will never be censored for artistic content, but the audience's physical safety is the prime concern. The board member is present mainly to assist the performer.
People or groups who wish to use the upstairs space for a social event of any kind - benefits, bands, parties - must go through the Student Activities Office
registration process as well as signing out the space with PW. The participating parties (pun intended) must fill out forms with Phil O'Hara in the student
activities office and guarantee 5 party managers at each event.
As an event in the upstairs space, you can, if you choose, be included in the weekly PW email and advertised on the PW website. However, you should let PW know a week in advance.
PW asks that anyone performing in the upstairs space come to the weekly PW meeting on Sunday, at 1pm in the upstairs space. Come the Sunday before your performance.
It is expected that after using the space it will be returned to its original condition if not better. This includes not only cleaning up after performances, but also after each rehearsal. Permission must be obtained in order to leave things in the space between rehearsals.
The upstairs space is used quite frequently, and it is likely that there will be performances, rehearsals, meetings or workshops in the space between your rehearsals. While the event that is currently performing gets priority, PW cannot guarantee that furniture, seating, props and even lights will not be moved between rehearsals. Contact the upstairs space coordinator with concerns and special requests, and we will do our best to accommodate.
The upstairs space is occasionally used by PW to store furniture, equipment and additional seating. During performances, we do our best to minimize the storage and to keep as far out of the way as possible. None of this material may be removed from the space, and none of it may be used without permission of the PW board.
PW reserves the right to make future alterations to this policy.
