staff applications

each staff member applicant should meet with the director and write something that addresses the questions for their position. these need not be lengthy, but feel free to be as specific as you like. don't be intimidated! these are just prompts to help you talk about your ideas and what you would bring to the show. if you have questions, please talk to the mentor for this slot.

questions for set designers

  • what excites you about this show? why do you want to work on it? feel free to be as specific as you like.
  • what excites you about working with this director?
  • what previous experience, if any, do you have in the theatre?
  • what previous experience, if any, do you have in the position in which you are interested?
  • would you be willing to assist in this position? if you are chosen to fill this position, would you be willing to have an assistant?
  • how have your preliminary conversations with the director gone?
  • talk us through your ideas for this set. also, talk us through your reading of the text and how the two relate to eachother.
  • please provide us with a rough set design in whatever way works best for you. a sketch, a ground plan, a model. also tell us a little about it: audience/space relationship, visual composition, budget consciousness, or anything else you think is important for us to be aware of.

  • what previous experience, if any, do you have in the theatre?
  • what previous experience, if any, do you have in the position in which you are interested?

  • how have your preliminary conversations with the director gone?
  • what overall role do you see lighting taking in this production?
  • how do the elements of your lighting design represent ideas, themes, or settings in the script? ....in the director's ideas? feel free to discuss color, angle, texture, composition, and/or cueing.

questions for costume designers

  • what excites you about this show? why do you want to work on it? feel free to be as specific as you like.
  • what excites you about working with this director?
  • what previous experience, if any, do you have in the theatre?
  • what previous experience, if any, do you have in the position in which you are interested?
  • would you be willing to assist in this position? if you are chosen to fill this position, would you be willing to have an assistant?
  • how have your preliminary conversations with the director gone?
  • what overall role do you see costume design taking in this production?
  • how will it work thematically with the text and with the director's ideas?
  • talk us through some specific ideas you have for the costume design of this show.
  • please feel free to include sketches, a model, or any other visual representation of your costumes, if you wish.
