I. Definition of Production Workshop
Production Workshop (P.W.) is a non-profit student-run organization providing opportunities for theatrical experience to the Brown community. Located in the second floor Faunce House Art Gallery, P.W. produces both experimental and traditional works each year. P.W. is the only theatrical group on campus that can provide a place for the student to work creatively without an overriding concern for success or failure. Participation in P.W. is open to the entire Brown community.
II. History of Production Workshop
Production Workshop was conceived and founded in 1960 by three students who felt the need for even more diversified dramitic activities than either Sock and Buskin or Brownbrokers could offer. That need still exists. Over the past four years, P.W. has exanded its season to include from nine to twelve shows each year. Approximetely 300 people participate in some capacity in these shows yearly. Between 1500 and 3000 people view P.W. productions annually.
III. Structure of Production Workshop
  1. Production Workshop is managed by a board of directors consisting of a minimum of nine students and a maximum of fourteen. new members are elected by current members on the basis of a student's involvement in the orgraniztion, his/her dedication to it and his/her skill on one or more of the following areas: acting, technical work, directing, and theatre management. Elections to the board are held, as required, throughout the school year.
  2. Weekly meetings are held by the governing board; the chairmanshop of P.W. rotates monthly amongst the members of the board. A treasurer, secretary, and librarian are elected each spring for the following year.
  3. The duties of the governing board are to:
    1. Maintain and upgrade the physical plant, i.e. the Faunce House Art Gallery and other rooms designated for use to P.W.
    2. Select shows to be presented int he P.W. space. The word "show" includes any theatrical presentation: dance, mime, poetry readings, puppet theatre, comic routines, musicals, or more traditional theatre forms. In general, proposals for productions are judged on the following criteria:
      1. experience, competence, and responsibility of the director and primary technical staff
      2. suitability of the script and the proposed production for performance in the P.W. space.
      3. financial feasibility
      4. soundness and completeness of the proposal in demonstrating consideration of and compliance with the above criteria
    3. Allocate production money.
    4. Oversee the production of shows
    5. The above duties are performed with the understanding that Production Workshop is reponsible to William Suprenaut, the Director of Student Activities in Faunce House, and the University Council of Students.
IV. Finances of Production Workshop
  1. All exenses of Production Workshop shall be paid through the Office of Student Activites, and all funds collected by the group from any sources, such as donations, shall be deposited with that office.
  2. The Production Workshop group agrees to follow all regulations regarding transactions as set forth by the Office of Student Activities.
  3. If the organization becomes inactive for a period of three years, any funds left in the treasury of the organization shall revert to the general funds of the Office of Student Activities.
V. Addendum
  1. Production Workshop is in no way related to the Brown University Theatre Department, Brown University Sock and Buskin Theatre, or the student-run theatrical organization Brownbrokers.
  2. Production Workshop operates independently of the new Lyman Theatre Arts Complex; theatre space in the complex has been allotted to Sock and Buskin for university productions and guest performances.
  3. Additional by-laws and a compilation of current operating procedures may be obtained through the P.W. board.
